Works by Australian Composers



Since its inception, The
Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia has required Competitors to perform Australian works as part of their Competition repertoire. The Competition has also commissioned a number of works from some of Australia's most eminent composers. Scores of these commissioned works are available from the Australian Music Centre www.amcoz.com.au

1977 - Stage I
Competitors were required to perfrom a published work by an Australian composer written after 1950 OR a work composed after 1950 from the Competitor's own country.
1981 - Stage I
Competitors were required to perform one of the following commissioned works.
Nigel Butterley Uttering Joyous Leaves
Peter Sculthorpe Mountains
Larry Sitsky Arch (Fantasia No. 4)
1985 - Stage II
Competitors were required to perform one of the following commissioned works.
Graham Hair Under Aldebaran
Bozidar Kos Kolo
James Penberthy Clocks
1988 - Stage III
Australia's Bicentennary year. Competitors were required to perform one of the set works by Don Banks, Miriam Hyde, Ross Edwards, Roy Agnew, Raymond Hanson, Richard Meale or Percy Grainger.
1992 - Stage III
Competitors were required to perform a work written after 1950 from their own country.
1996 - Stage III
Competitors were required to choose an Australian work to perform from the following list:
Carl Vine Piano Sonata No. 1 (first or second movement)
Nigel Butterley Uttering Joyous Leaves
2000 - Stage III
Competitors were required to perform either Bagatelles 1, 2 and 4 or 1, 2 and 5 (Carl Vine) or one of the commissioned works below:
Peter Sculthorpe Between Five Bells
Elena Kats-Chernin Page Turn
2004 - Stage III
Competitors were required to perform one of the following commissioned works.
Brenton Broadstock Tower of Strength (Torre di Forza)
Gordon Kerry Figured in the Drift of Stars
2008- Stage III
Competitors were required to perform one of the following commissioned works.
Andrew Ford Thin Air
Roger Smalley Morceau de concours
